Jewar Airport Inaugurated: Everything About India's Newest International Airport

Overview
PM Modi inaugurated the Noida International Airport at Jewar on March 28, 2026. Here is everything about its location, capacity (70 MPPA by 2040), when flights start, how to reach it, and what it means for Delhi NCR travel and property prices.
Where is Jewar airport and why was it built?
The Noida International Airport (IATA code: DXN) is located in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh โ approximately 75 kilometres from central Delhi and 40 kilometres from Noida city centre along the Yamuna Expressway. It was built because Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has been operating near capacity, creating congestion that costs passengers time and the economy efficiency.
The airport will serve as NCR's second international gateway, serving Noida, Greater Noida, Agra, Mathura, and large parts of western Uttar Pradesh. For residents of these areas, Jewar will be significantly closer and more convenient than IGI Airport, cutting journey times and reducing dependence on the congested Delhi road network.
Key facts: capacity, cost, and who built it
The airport is developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG, in partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India under a 40-year concession that began October 1, 2021. Phase I was built at a cost of โน11,200 crore. The full development vision is approximately โน29,560 crore. The terminal was designed by a Nordic-Grimshaw-Haptic-STUP consortium, with Tata Projects Ltd as EPC contractor.
Initial passenger capacity is 12 million passengers per annum, scalable to 70 MPPA by 2040 โ potentially one of Asia's largest aviation hubs. The airport spans over 3,000 acres, features a 3,900-metre runway capable of wide-body aircraft, advanced ILS navigation systems, a multi-modal cargo hub with initial capacity of 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually, and the final vision includes five runways.
When will flights start at Jewar airport?
Commercial flight operations are expected to begin within 45 to 60 days after the March 28 inauguration. The DGCA has granted the aerodrome licence for public use, and the BCAS has cleared security requirements โ both essential prerequisites for commercial operations. Initial services will focus on domestic routes, with international operations following as airlines establish slots and schedules.
Airlines including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air are expected to apply for slots. The airport is designed to be complementary to IGI rather than a competitor โ routing domestic and regional international flights through Jewar to reduce Delhi airport pressure. International routes are likely six months to one year after domestic launch.
How to reach Jewar airport from Delhi, Noida, and Agra
The airport sits directly on the Yamuna Expressway. From central Delhi, the drive via NH48 and the Expressway takes approximately 60 to 80 minutes. From Noida Sector 18 the drive is approximately 40 to 50 minutes. From Agra the airport is around 100 kilometres โ making it a practical alternative for Agra-area residents who currently have to travel to Delhi for most flights.
Metro connectivity is planned through an Aqua Line extension. Regional rail links through the Delhi-Varanasi High Speed Rail corridor are also planned for the longer term. For now, road access via the Yamuna Expressway is the primary route. The airport features a multi-modal transport hub design for seamless road, rail, metro, and regional transport connectivity once all phases are complete.
Property prices and economic impact near Jewar
The Noida-Jewar corridor has been one of India's most closely watched real estate zones since the airport was confirmed. Residential and commercial land on the Yamuna Expressway has seen significant price appreciation over the past three years. CM Yogi Adityanath estimated the airport will generate around โน1 lakh crore in revenue for Uttar Pradesh's economy. The Film City project, semiconductor cluster, and data centre zones nearby have all been positioned to benefit from the airport's connectivity.
Industrial and logistics land near the cargo hub is expected to draw distribution centres, cold chains, and manufacturing units seeking easy air freight access. Jewar is part of India's broader greenfield airport construction programme โ with over 30 airports at various stages across the country. At its final form with five runways and 70 MPPA capacity, Jewar Airport will be one of Asia's largest aviation hubs and a defining piece of Indian infrastructure through the 2040s.
